Two is Better than Four.
How come there are no car racing champions that went on to win a motorcycle championship, at the highest level? In all of my searches, I haven’t found one. However the opposite is true. John Surtees.
John Surtees was a motorcycling champion at the highest level, Grand Prix Champion 1956, 1958-1960. Then it only took him four years to become a Formula 1 champion in 1964.
Why is it that no Formula 1 champion went on to win any Grand Prix Motorcycle championships? Lewis Hamilton does motorcycle track days occasionally.
In the video below they show and talk about Lewis Hamilton’s track bike.
Even Ducati is releasing a Senna version of their Monster bike. Ayrton Senna, known as one of the greatest by Formula 1 fans, was a passionate motorcycle according to Road & Track.
Other recent Formula 1 champions that ride motorcycles are in this article. (Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, Kimi Raikkonen, Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso, Nico Rosberg, Ayrton Senna, and Lewis Hamilton)
So what is it about two wheels as opposed to four? I don’t know for sure, but I think it’s about connection with the machine and the intimate relationship with grip. If you slide in a car, you have two extra wheels to catch you. Grip is so much more important to you on a motorcycle. I think this also makes motorcycle track days a lot more fun than car track days.
