Removing the "Then What?"

What if everyday was a Monday? Uh, no thanks. What if everyday was a Saturday? Yay! What if there were no Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays? Huh?! Weekends are the biggest destination for people who haven’t reached retirement. You get to sleep in, stay up late and be lazy during the day. What’s better than a weekend, retirement. Where you don’t have to do anything or very little of anything. This is actually the problem.

The ultimate destination is death. So why do we treat weekends and retirement as a destination? Because it’s easy. With that logic, it suggests not to take the easy route.

It was only a year ago that I heard the phrase, “A destination-less life”. I heard it on a Jordan B Peterson podcast with Dr. John Delony (actually, both are doctors). The concept was first introduced to me several years earlier by listening to the audio version of David Goggins’ first book, Can’t Hurt Me. Then a more in depth understanding by listening to his second book, Never Finished. Although he never refers to it as a destination-less life. He always says, “Stay Hard!”

Dr. Jordan B Peterson laughs at the idea of retirement as sitting on the beach with a margarita. He says that’s not retirement, it’s a travel poster, or an alcoholic beverage commercial. What are you going to do, get sun burnt and become an alcoholic? Then what? You don’t need to retire to do that.

My first destination-less objective was getting up early. Everyday. Then, it was to wake up early and workout, but only working out Monday through Friday. I know you wouldn’t see it, if you saw me, but since September 2021, I have been waking up two and half hours before I’m supposed to be at work, to exercise for an hour. If I can get that to go from Monday through Friday to everyday then that would be more of an alignment with a destination-less life.

Caffeine is for pussies. But yet, sometimes, I’m a pussy. Sometimes I can go a month or two with no caffeine. It is the weekends that will sometimes get me. I don’t need caffeine to wake up, but the thought of caffeine several hours after waking up early on the weekend sounds so satisfying. Satisfying yourself though caffeine is a weakness. Satisfying yourself through doing something incredibly difficult, is a strength.

Huh, I just found a solution to my problem. I don’t crave caffeine on the weekdays when I workout, but I do on the weekends, when I don’t exercise.

Trying to integrate more habits into a destination-less life is not easy. I struggle with this. And there is so much to add to my everyday routine. But yet, there is also so much to remove. The people that I admire who talk about this way of life struggle with it too, but the gap between where they are and where I am is massive.

Excellence is what you are aiming for. Something you’ll never achieve. Which is perfect, because it removes the, “Then what?”

I know this doesn’t have much to do with motorcycles, or riding/driving techniques. But I set out to do at least one newsletter a week for a year. And see where it takes me.
